NEWS-NOTES
August 17, 2008
As we unite in worship today, we extend a warm welcome to each one present. We are glad to have you sharing in our celebration of worship. We invite you to sign our guest book in the Narthex and take a “Welcome” brochure. The “Welcome” brochures contain more information about St. John’s United Church of Christ. If you are visiting with us today, please be sure to take one home and get to know our church better. Also, please read and fill out the visitor card in your pew rack. For your convenience, childcare is provided each Sunday, 9:00 - 11:15 a.m., in the preschool playroom. During 8:00 a.m. worship, a quiet room is available for parents, or grandparents, to comfort their children. Following worship, join us for refreshments in the Fellowship Hall. A church member will be happy to show you the way.

WOMEN’S GUILD NEWS
St. John’s Women’s Guild has had a very busy summer. In June we visited the LaPorte County Home. We took lots of prizes and played Bingo with the residents. Esther Schlegelmilch and Eleanor Warnke served the group Strawberry Shortcake.
In July, members and guests enjoyed the play “Anything Goes” at the Main Street Theatre.
On Thursday, August 21st at 6:00 p.m. we will have our Annual Potluck and Bingo evening. Please bring a covered dish to share and two wrapped bingo prizes. Guests are always welcome!
FALL RUMMAGE SALE
The Fall Rummage Sale will be on:
Thurs., Sept. 25 - 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Fri., Sept. 26 - 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

You may begin to bring items for the sale after Labor Day. Please put them under the coat rack across from the electronic sign by the Fellowship Hall. Do not leave any items between the doors leading to the parking lot.
Help is needed with setting up the sale beginning at 9 a.m. on: Monday, Tuesday, and/or Wednesday, September 22, 23 & 24, for a few hours or more.
We especially need men on Monday, September 22, at 8:30a.m. to help set up tables. Thank you!
ST. JOHN’S FALL FESTIVAL
SEPTEMBER 27 & 28
Last year the Christian Nurture Committee, with the help of many in the congregation, held a successful Fall Festival. Our profit this year will again be used for our camperships and other creative ways to extend Christian Nurture to benefit areas not specifically budgeted by the church. God inspired ideas are always welcome!
The most ambitious part of the Festival is the Nelson’s Port-A-Pit Chicken sales for Saturday, September 27th. Tickets to sell or purchase have been mailed to you earlier this week. If someone doesn’t receive tickets or is able to sell more than received, they will be available from me or the church office. I’ve been assured the Port-A-Pit chicken is as good after freezing and reheating later. Purchasing and donating the chicken would be a wonderful mission project.
Please return money or unsold tickets to the church office by Friday, September 12 (placing the money and unsold tickets in a simple envelope with your name and the words “Nelson’s Port-A-Pit Chicken” on it would be helpful). Please also note that chicken with pre-sold tickets MUST be picked up on Saturday, September 27th by 1:00 p.m.
I will be looking for help on Saturday, September 27, for our semicircular “drive through.” On both days we will be selling baked goods, and fall craft items and donated produce. Saturday, the 27th, is also the last day of the Fall Rummage Sale. This event may bring additional people to our Festival. Let’s do our best to make this a blessed year!
God bless you,
Greg Kearney - 872-5366
P. S. Please don’t refrain from calling me late or leaving a message on my answering machine. I will be teaching and coaching in the fall.
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
In the dark? Follow the Son!
Ladies Study Opportunities
Fall 2008
Exciting study opportunities abound this fall! We will be studying 1st & 2nd Thessalonians, 1st & 2nd Timothy and Titus.
Our ladies home group is moving to the church and will be held in the Adobe room (aka Christian Nurture room) Thursday evenings at 5:15, as well as Sunday mornings at 9:00 a.m.
We will be doing a book review of the best selling book ‘The Shack.’ This is a great read but, is it heresy or biblically accurate? We will find out by comparing what we are reading to the Word of God. This is a great way to have fun, fellowship coffee and study! Saturday mornings @ 7:30.
During the Holiday season, we will be doing a non-homework video series called ‘Liquid.’ This series compares ‘snapshots’ of real life situations with scripture and discussion. This program is very applicable to both genders and all ages. We also are looking into a Nancy Leigh DeMoss video class for later in the season, to be announced.
If you are serious about studying or just want to test the waters, there is something planned to grow each of you. Please contact me @ 879-0150 or call Nicole so that we know how many books to order. New classes will start Thursday September 11th.
“2 Peter 3:18 - But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.” Carol Wright
Thank You
The Church Growth and Membership Committee would like to thank everyone who donated a baked item. Without your help this would not have happened. We made $297.50. The Church Growth committee is in the process of having a flyer printed. This money will help with the printing costs. Again, thank you for your donations. In Christian faith, The Church Growth and Membership Committee.
COFFEE HOUR
Thank you to those who have signed up to host a Sunday Coffee Hour. There are still opportunities open in August and September. If you enjoy fellowshipping during the Coffee Hour after the 10 a.m. service, sign up to be a host. Choose a Sunday, and add your name to the sheet on the main bulletin board. An instruction sheet is also available for further information.
